Book Review: One For The Money by Janet Evanovich

One For The Money by Janet Evanovich
St. Martin’s Paperback Edition
320 pages
2003

I see Janet Evanovich books everywhere. Which is understandable given she now has 12 books in the Stepanie Plum series. After reading One For The Money, I can understand her success.

Stephanie Plum is an out-of-work lingerie buyer who, out of desperation and one step ahead of eviction, takes a job with her cousin, Vinnie, as a bounty hunter. Her first case is that of Joseph Morelli, the smooth-talking, sexy, trouble maker from her high school days. The grown up Morelli is a wanted criminal, possibly guilty of cold-blooded murder and a cop too. Along the way, Stepanie is assisted by Ranger, a fellow bounty hunter who reminded me a great deal of Dog, the Bounty Hunter, assorted friends in the burg, which is what she calls the section of Trenton she lives in, and after proving to be an unequaled pain-in-the-ass, Morelli himself. She also encounters a series of bad guys, from the harmless drunk who becomes her first bounty, to the seriously insane champion boxer, Ramirez.

I enjoyed Evanovich’s writing style. But, I’m a fan of first person. She keeps the story moving, doesn’t throw in curves that make no sense, and keeps her characters believable. The ending makes sense, wraps the story up, but leaves you wanting more. I was, however, able to figure out the bad guy of the story but that’s not a problem for me.

Her description of Ramirez gave me a creepy feeling:

There was something about the density of his eyes, black holes where everything gets sucked in, and nothing comes out, that suggested a hiding place for evil. And the smile, a little goofy, a little sick in its sweetness, hinting of insanity.
I find many books funny, but few have actually made me laugh out loud. Evanovich did it several times. The biggest laugh was towards the end, between Stephanie and Morelli, but quoting it would be too big a spoiler. Here’s another example that had me chuckling. It’s between Stephanie and Ranger, after Ranger has had to come to her rescue when Morelli handcuffs her to her shower curtain rod:

"Picked the lock. Didn’t think it prudent to wake up the super." He looked over at my window. Rain was spattering on the dark pane, and a piece of torn screen draped over the sill. "I only do the Spiderman shit in nice weather."

"Morelli wrecked my screen."

"Guess he in a hurry."

"I’ve noticed you only talk ghetto half of the time."

"I’m multilingual," Ranger said.

I followed him out the door, feeling jealous, wishing I knew a second language.
My favorite line has to do with Stephanie’s reaction to a phone call from Ramirez:

Fear is not a logical emotion.
There were two things that were bothersome - Evanovich’s constant references to her "pocketbook". With all that Stephanie carries in said pocketbook, it must be the size of a backpack, and Stephanie’s constant need to turn to men, whether it’s Ranger or Morelli or another male friend, for help. Hopefully in the following books she becomes a little less dependent.

Rating: It’s a keeper and I’ll be adding the others to it.

I see these books everywhere, and I love LOL funny books (Bridget Jones does it for me). One day, I'll have to start reading them. I've thought about just collecting the ones I find really cheap (saw one yesterday at Half Price Books for $1.00), but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

She got me chuckling a couple of times but, be warned, my sense of humor is seriously twisted. Comes from too many night shifts and too much caffeine!

The first one was an enjoyable, easy read. One thing I didn't put in my review - I found myself becoming impatient with the character's continued inexperience. But, that's viewing it from my background. She did things I would never have done...

I'd be interested in your take on things if and when you do read it.

I was rather impatient with her too, and I have no experience with such things at all. I think it's because I have something, whatever it is, that occasionally surfaces as common sense, and I wanted to slap her for acting like an idiot over and over and over and over.

You may gather that this was not my favorite book :) I didn't like the in-your-face 1st person writing style either, so that just made it worse.

Good take on it, Paloma. She did remain awfully naive a lot longer than she should've

And to be perfectly honest, the ending was a little hard for me to take because even the people who are accustomed to firing a weapon would have a hard time doing what she did, under stress and all that.

Man, I honestly did like the book. It doesn't sound like it now, but I did. I really enjoyed the back and forth between Stephanie and Morelli. And Ranger is one of those characters that I could make my main character, which I find intriguing. I'm more often than not drawn to the background guys.

Ranger I liked. If she'd made him the main character I might have a different opinion of the book... And I have absolutely no recollection of the ending at all. Is that bad?

Ha, I pick at books I like too. Glad I'm not the only one :)

Well, it certainly means the ending wasn't memorable, doesn't it.

Stephanie shoots the bad guy. With remarkable accuracy. Numerous times.

I've still only read this first one in this series, tho I own a few others. There aren't enough hours in the day to get around to every book I want to read!

I LOVE Janet Evanovich's books! Laugh out loud every time. I'm waiting to dive into Mean Lean Thirteen.

What's funny is she is such a rookie and doesn't have a clue what she's doing. She admits it in every book.

What Paloma didn't like about it is what I loved about it. I love that in-your-face style. I wouldn't want EVERY book I read to be that way, but it's fun to read them interspersed with the more serious books.

Glad you discovered her. Have fun reading! She's a hoot.

Angela -

I know that feeling. I would love to be able to spend hours reading but real life simply won't let me. Maybe some day...

Janelle -

Like I've said already - that sort of thing usually proves irritating after awhile for me, but not so much with Evanovich. I have no idea why. If Stephanie is still blundering around clueless after a couple more books, however, I may run out of patience.

Ranger is another story, though. I'd read a book about him and one about Morelli any day.
