"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of Library." - Jorge Luis Borges (1890-1996)

So... It's Official
NaNo 2009 is officially over for me.
My final word count, just verified and made nice and legal at the National Novel Writing Month website was 52,308 words.
I think this is the earliest I've ever verified my word count.
I'm happy with my story and there are definitely parts I love. I also don't think the characters are quite done with me yet... but that's okay because I love them, too.
But, I have one question that has bothered me for a couple of years now. This story isn't finished. I'll continue with it until it is complete, but since I didn't write an entire novel in 50,000 words... did I really win?
I think so but I'm curious. What do you guys think?

Congratulations, CJ! I think you can count it as a win. You not only met the set goal but also went above and beyond.
well i sure would consider it a win!
congratulations CJ !! and since most publishers want more then 50,000 wds you are writing a proper "book"!!
Congratulations! Of course you won! I think WriMo is not so much about finishing a story as about getting something amazing done. 50,000 words in 30 days is amazing, it's a good push in the right direction, and it helps you see what you can do.
Thanks, guys. I feel pretty much the same way - NaNo is an incentive, not necessarily an end goal. I'm happy with what I've got and can't wait to see where it goes.

Yes, of course you won. The goal is to get 50,000 words written. You don't have to finish at exactly 50K. In fact, I noticed one person wrote about 200,000 words in 10 days (which I cannot even begin to fathom doing). The funny thing is that you don't actually have to complete your novel to win. You just have to reach the elusive 50K. Congratulations!

Thanks! Like I said - I'm pretty happy with it overall and I'm also with you - it's not a finished product it's the number that matters, which btw, I say you reached between what you wrote and tossed and then wrote again! You should've cobbled the two together and verified that.
